Passenger on Beijing-bound flight attempts hijacking plane

Sheetal Sukhija - Monday 16th April, 2018

BEIJING, China - In an incident on Sunday, an Air China flight which took off from the capital of southern Hunan province, Changsha to Beijing was forced to be diverted to Zhengzhou.

According to the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), a mentally ill passenger tried to hold a flight attendant hostage in his attempt to hijack the plane.

According to CAAC, the passenger had used a fountain pen as a weapon to threaten the crew member, leading the Air China Flight 1350 to make an unscheduled landing.

The Henan Airport Group meanwhile confirmed that the flight made an unscheduled landing at the Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport, in central Henan province.

Later, the CAAC issued a statement saying, "The incident was successfully dealt with at 1:17 p.m. and passengers and crew members are safe.”

Officials were also quoted as saying in local reports that the 41-year-old man was said to be from Anhua and had a "history of mental illness.“

They added that the man has been taken into custody over the incident.

Local reports also confirmed that all passengers on board the flight were safely evacuated through the rear exit and the man was subdued.

The Henan Province Airport Group added that the airport resumed normal operations.
